Opening Prayer

LEADER: Like prophets of the ages past,

PEOPLE: We claim that Christ is ours!

LEADER: Like shepherds watching temple flocks,

PEOPLE: We claim that Christ is ours!

LEADER: Like Mary with a heart of hope,

PEOPLE: We claim that Christ is ours!

LEADER: And like Magi bearing many gifts,

PEOPLE: We claim that Christ is ours!

LEADER: Friends, let us pray….

ALL: Almighty and Everlasting God, Who sent Your Son into this world, we praise You on this Sunday of the joyful Christmas season. Like the saints before His birth and all the saints who witnessed it, we claim the Savior as our own and worship Him as King of Kings. Lord, may You find delight in all the gifts we bring to Him, and with them we present ourselves with gratitude and bless Your name. To You be the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Song of Adoration

Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Prayer of Confession

LEADER: Friends, let us confess our sins together saying….

ALL: O Christ the King, we confess to You that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have claimed Your Kingdom as our own like Herod did in Israel. And we have failed in bringing gifts to You and claiming You as Lord of all. Lord, in Your mercy, forgive us and restore us. We place the crown upon Your head, and bring You gifts that You deserve. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.

(confess in silence)

Song of Confession

Trisagion

Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Confession of Forgiveness and Faith

(based on 1 John 1:9 and the 2nd Helvetic Confession)

LEADER: Brothers and Sisters, if we confess our sins, Christ our King is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of His holy Church, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all of our sins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ALL: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and made righteous. Thanks be to God!

LEADER: Let us confess our faith together saying….

ALL: We believe in one God, Who created all things, and is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And we believe in the Bible, the Holy Scriptures, as the Word of God and rule of faith. We believe that God should be worshiped alone, through the power of the Spirit and in Jesus’ name. And we believe in the holy universal Church, where sins are forgiven, grace abounds, and eternal life is given to all. Amen.

Sermon

Text: Matthew 2:1-18
Title: Wiseguys
Preacher: Calen Gayle (All Saints Anglican Chaplaincy, Vevey Switzerland)

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Song of Thanksgiving

We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.

Oh-o, Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again.
King forever, ceasing never,
Over us all to reign.

Oh-o, Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a deity neigh.
Prayer and praising, all men raising,
Worship Him, God most high.

Oh-o, Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume,
Breathes of life of gathering gloom.
Sorrow, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone cold tomb.

Oh-o, Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Earth to heaven replies.

Oh-o, Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

CLOSING PRAYER

with the Lord's Prayer and Benediction

LEADER: Gracious Father, we thank You for the star that rose in the East, and for the Magi who bravely followed it with gifts for Christ the new born King. Give us the true wisdom that made them to be called the “Wisemen”, where they looked beyond Herod’s mighty court to the humble court in Bethlehem. May we bring all that we have and all that we are before Your Son, and may He shine on us with grace and lead us in the days ahead. We ask all this in His precious name as we pray the prayer that He taught us saying….

ALL: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen.

LEADER: Receive this blessing….May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. And may the Lord lift the light of his countenance upon you, and give you His peace, both now and forever.

ALL: Amen!

LEADER: Go in grace! Go in peace! You belong to Jesus!
