Judas changed his mind

Social Distance Worship at Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020 | Matthew 27:1-10

Social Distance Worship [SDW] is not a livestream, but a liturgy that can be followed from the comforts of your home, or any other place beyond the sanctuary, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This liturgy features prayers, Bible readings and recordings of a sermon and worship songs from our regular services. Each Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. (CET) we will post a new SDW liturgy to our website, and you can find today’s liturgy on this page.

I. Palm Sunday Greeting

II. Blessing Of The Palms

Scripture Reading (Matthew 21:1-11)

1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and He sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before Him and that followed Him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Prayer of the Palms

O Christ our King, on the first Palm Sunday You entered Jerusalem offering peace, but not through the swords of worldly power or the crowns of earthly kingdoms. Lord, You offered peace through a humble way of serving others, and You showed God’s love to everyone through a death that You did not deserve. With believers in other places I wave palm branches with thanks and praise, and I throw down garments in worship this day and receive Your presence within this place. Enter Your people’s hearts and reign in us by grace and truth. “Hosanna! Hosanna!”, we pray to You. Hosanna in the highest!

Song of the Palms (Hosanna)

(Sing along and wave your printed palm branch. You can also have you own palm procession by walking around the room.)

Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest!

Lord we lift up Your name
With hearts full of praise
Be exalted, O Lord, my God!
Hosanna in the highest!

Glory, Glory,
Glory to the King of Kings!
Glory, Glory,
Glory to the King of Kings!

Lord we lift up Your name
With hearts full of praise
Be exalted, O Lord, my God!
Glory to the King of Kings!

Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest!

Lord we lift up Your name
With hearts full of praise
Be exalted, O Lord, my God!
Hosanna in the highest!

Be exalted, O Lord, my God!
Hosanna in the highest!

III. Adoration

Prayer of Adoration

O Christ, with my brothers and sisters around the world I worship You with thanks and praise, and I receive Your presence like the first disciples who laid palm branches at Your feet. Receive our worship as we crown You now through song and prayer, and be glorified as we look to You and celebrate Your love and peace. In Your gracious name I pray. Amen.

Song of Adoration (Hast Thou Heard Him)

Hast thou heard Him, seen Him, known Him?
Is not thine a captured heart?
Chief among ten thousand own Him;
Joyful choose the better part.

Captivated by His beauty,
Worthy tribute haste to bring.
Let His peerless worth constrain thee,
Crown Him now unrivaled King.

What can strip the seeming beauty,
From the idols of the earth?
Not a sense of right nor duty,
But the sight of peerless worth.

Captivated by His beauty,
Worthy tribute haste to bring.
Let His peerless worth constrain thee,
Crown Him now unrivaled King.

Tis that look that melted Peter,
Tis that face that Steven saw,
Tis that heart that wept with Mary,
Can alone from idols draw.

Captivated by His beauty,
Worthy tribute haste to bring.
Let His peerless worth constrain thee,
Crown Him now unrivaled King.

IV. Confession

Prayer of Confession

O Christ our unrivaled King, I confess to You that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed; by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved You with my whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and I have not loved my neighbors as I love myself. For this I am truly sorry, and I humbly repent for the sake of Your name. Lord, forgive me and answer my Hosannas; my cries for salvation and freedom from the power of sin. To You and You alone I pray. Amen

(Confess in Silence)

Song of Confession (I Have Decided To Follow Jesus)

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;

No turning back,
No turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;

No turning back,
No turning back.

Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;

No turning back,
No turning back.

Confession of Forgiveness

(Read this aloud)

Blessed be the Lord, for He has wondrously shown His steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city.

I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from Your sight.”
But You heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to You for help.

Love the Lord, all you His saints!
The Lord preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!

Song of Forgiveness (When The Saints Go Marching In)

O when the saints go marching in,
O when the saints go marching in,
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in.

O when the sun refused to shine,
O when the sun refused to shine,
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the sun refused to shine.

O when they crown Him Lord of all,
O when they crown Him Lord of all,
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When they crown Him Lord of all.

O when the saints go marching in,
O when the saints go marching in,
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in.

V. Message

Scripture Reading (Matthew 27:1-10)

1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.

Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

VI. Thanksgiving

Prayer of Thanksgiving

O Christ, I thank You for allowing me to see another Holy Week, and as Your people celebrate its special days may we not lose sight of their meaning and truth. I pray that throughout this week You will enter our hearts like Jerusalem’s gates, and fill us with Your steadfast love that we might serve all people with joy. May everything that we do be driven by love and nothing more, and may we give the world a vision of You the true Messiah and King of Kings. I ask all this in Your great name; You Who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, as one God, both now and forever. Amen.

Song of Thanksgiving (Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us With Your Love)

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

Kneels at the feet of His friends,
Silently washes their feet,
Master Who acts as a slave to them.

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

Neighbors are rich and poor
Varied in color and race,
Neighbors are near and far away..

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

These are the ones we should serve,
These are the ones we should love,
All are neighbors to us and You.

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

Loving puts us on our knees,
Willing to wash others’ feet,
This is the way we should live with You.

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

Kneel at the feet of our friends,
Silently washes their feet,
This is the way we should live with You.

Jesu, Jesu,
Fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from You.

Jesu, Jesu.

VII. Closing

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.

Amen.
