«The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.»

Proverbs 9:10

When a man walks in the fear of God he knows no fear, even if he were to be surrounded by wicked men. He has the fear of God within him and wears the invincible armor of faith. This makes him strong and able to take on anything, even things which seem difficult or impossible to most people.

– Symeon the New Theologian

Fearing of the Lord does mean being afraid God, but having a respect or reverence for Him. It is like watching a storm where the lightning is beautiful and captures your eye, but you keep a distance because you know what the power of lightning can do. When we fear God we admire His beauty, but we approach Him with care because we know His great power and might.

Take two or three minutes to look upon the picture above and think about the fear of the Lord, then pray:

Almighty, eternal, and merciful God, Whose Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, I praise You for Your beauty and stand in awe of Your power and might. Lord, may I never cease to fear You and treat Your presence with respect, and may I never take for granted the precious right that Christ has given me. Because of His humble work through His life, death, and resurrection, I have the right come before You and call You, “Abba Father”. To You be the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
